Building resilient farms with nature-friendly farming
At Cumbria Connect, we’re working with local farmers from Penrith to Kendal, supporting them to optimise their land for wildlife as well as food production.
We recognise that every farm is unique and every farmer knows their land best. That’s why we listen, collaborate and provide the tools and knowledge to support your vision for a sustainable future.
Nature-friendly farming isn’t just about protecting wildlife—it’s about reducing costs, improving soil health and creating a more resilient business.
By working with nature, you can safeguard your farm’s future and boost your profitability.
Supporting farming in a new era
The agricultural landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. While intensive farming methods have contributed to environmental challenges, the sector is also capable of leading nature’s recovery.
Farmers manage 70% of the UK’s land, so are vital in tackling climate change, restoring biodiversity and protecting our natural world.
Government schemes, like the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship, reward farmers for adopting practices that support nature.
At Cumbria Connect, we’re helping farmers and land managers in the Lowther and Upper Lune Valleys take advantage of these opportunities and make the most of the available support. By equipping our farmers with the tools and knowledge to optimise their land for wildlife, as well as food production, we can support them in securing financial incentives and strengthening the long-term resilience of their business.
We provide advice and support on creating and enhancing spaces for nature including planting and restoring hedgerows, tree and scrub planting, creating and restoring ponds, restoring traditional hay meadows and establishing buffer strips for insects and birds.
By working with nature, farms can be more efficient, sustainable and adaptable to future challenges.
Planning for 20 years of landscape-scale nature recovery
Cumbria Connect also manages the Defra-funded Penrith2Kendal Landscape Recovery Scheme. This ambitious programme began in April 2024 with a two-year development and brings together farmers, landowners and organisations to plan a 20-year scheme for landscape-scale nature recovery across 16,000 hectares. Farmers participating in this programme are pioneering a model for sustainable agriculture that benefits both nature and business.
Why nature-friendly farming makes good business sense
When you work with nature, your farm can thrive. Healthy soils, thriving ecosystems and cleaner water don’t just benefit wildlife – they can improve your bottom line too.
Nature-friendly farming helps you:
- Lower input costs by using fewer chemicals and external feeds.
- Boost resilience by being better prepared for weather extremes and market shifts.
- Access government payments for environmental stewardship through agri-environment schemes.
In return, nature rewards farmers and land managers with:
- Healthier soils, which support stronger crops, better pastures and healthier livestock.
- Increased biodiversity, delivering natural pest control and fewer issues with livestock health.
- Cleaner water and a more stable farm environment
When you embrace nature-friendly farming, your farming becomes more efficient, sustainable and profitable.
