Cumbria habitat restoration

Restoring woodlands, grasslands & wildlife corridors

At Cumbria Connect, we’re restoring habitats that support life and make Cumbria thrive. We’re expanding woodlands, restoring natural grasslands and working to reconnect fragmented landscapes.

By building more connected corridors for wildlife and working alongside sustainable farming, we’re creating spaces where nature can flourish, making Cumbria’s ecosystems stronger and better prepared to face climate challenges.

The impact of habitat loss on Cumbria's wildlife and ecosystems

Over the past 50 years, Cumbria’s landscape has changed dramatically.  More intensive farming and urban growth have stripped away flower meadows, hedgerows and woodlands—habitats that pollinators like bees, butterflies and other essential insects rely on.

Without these essential habitats, pollinators have declined, causing ripple effects up the food chain and leaving our landscapes emptier and quieter.

Why habitat restoration matters for people and nature

Nature supports us all; providing clean air, fresh water, fertile soils, carbon-absorbing forests and places of peace and beauty. But when we fragment and shrink these habitats, we risk losing these life-sustaining benefits.

That’s why Cumbria Connect is restoring balance to Cumbria’s landscapes, one woodland and hay meadow at a time.

With every tree we plant, every meadow we restore and every stretch of habitat we reconnect, we’re creating a richer, healthier countryside for wildlife and people.
